Project Engineer Civiel

As an Engineer in the petrochemical sector, you play a leading role in the design, development and improvement of a plant and you work closely together on the largest projects. Together with a team of experts, you will provide efficient and sustainable solutions that meet the highest standards.

Responsibilities

• As a Project Engineer Civil, you act as the Owner’s Engineer, representing the asset owner and overseeing both internal and external engineering companies during the Conceptual, FEED and Detailed Design phases.
• You are responsible for safeguarding technical quality, timelines, and budgets within your discipline, while ensuring alignment with overall project objectives.
• In this role, you will be a strong counterpart to contractors and engineering partners - able to challenge assumptions, push back in discussions with operating units and senior managers, and stand firm on critical technical and project decisions. Assertiveness, confidence, and the ability to maintain authority in multidisciplinary environments are key to success.
• Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Represent the Asset Owner in civil engineering matters across renovation, brownfield, and greenfield projects.
• Oversee engineering deliverables from contractors and engineering firms during studies, design, specification, tendering, and execution.
• Review and challenge technical designs, calculations, and specifications for concrete and steel structures.
• Ensure technical requirements are translated into robust design packages that meet safety, quality, and operability standards.
• Provide input for project and investment proposals, securing alignment with long-term asset strategies.
• Assess contractor proposals and bids, focusing on technical soundness and execution feasibility.
• Coordinate external parties during execution, including acceptance, commissioning, and handover phases.
• Identify opportunities for innovation and initiate improvements within civil engineering practices.
• Balance technical solutions against alternatives, evaluating costs, risks, and benefits.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
• At least 5 years of relevant work experience in civil engineering, preferably in an Asset Owner environment.
• Proven experience acting as Project Engineer, with strong understanding of FEED and Detailed Design phases.
• Solid structural engineering knowledge for assessing and challenging designs and calculations.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills; able to engage and influence stakeholders at different levels.
• Assertive, confident, and capable of standing your ground when dealing with contractors, operating units, and senior management.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a proactive and critical mindset.
• Resident in the Netherlands (applications from outside NL will not be shortlisted).
