Responsibilities

  • We have a contractor opening for an R&D Technician role in the Global Plastics Characterization Group in Terneuzen, The Netherlands.
  • This is a characterization and analytical process laboratory which characterizes polyethylene films to support Manufacturing plants, R&D projects, technical service studies, and process improvements.
  • The Terneuzen R&D Characterization laboratory provides characterization and testing support to internal and external clients in the areas of rheology, analytical, separations, sensory and process analytical.
  • The person in this position will work closely with Technicians, Research Scientists and engineers to continuously give support for business and continuously focuses on improving the technical capabilities of the laboratory.
  • The candidate must take ownership of the laboratory’s data and data quality and find ways to improve the efficiency of work processes.
  • Problem solving and team-work skills are crucial for executing routing test procedures and in the development of new ones.
  • The candidate should have good laboratory skills, ability and passion to learn new testing methods, flexibility to adapt tasks to meet client and lab needs, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • The candidate will be able to set up, conduct and analyze sensory, taste and haptics related sessions for our clients and also conduct tests, analyze data in analytical technology area.
  • Provide support on methodology of sensory science in terms of experimental design, statistical modeling/tools and data analysis.
  • Building and guiding of sensory panels to provide sensory leadership to R&D projects and enable tailored product design for our clients and to support existing product specification
  • Exploit existing sensory related product knowledge, identifying appropriate external partners and existing or new tools to address knowledge gaps.  
  • Become familiar with the sensory science panel, equipment and method requirements and be able to solve issues that arise in either sensory science technology area and/or analytical.
  • Lead initiatives to improve the overall lab performance and delivery of results to clients.
  • Conduct sensory related improvement and client research projects together with other Lab technologists and SME.
  • Become familiar with the ASTM / ISO requirements for methods used and be able to troubleshoot issues that arise in the work processes.
  • Participate on global teams to standardize and improve test methods.
  • Implement new test equipment and methods, working within the Quality and Safety system to write the operating procedures and training other Technologists or team members.
  • Keep customers satisfaction high with delivering timely and quality data.
  • Prioritize and complete work based on relative importance and urgency.
  • Understand and follow appropriate EH&S standards, policies and procedures applicable to their job. Lead by example in the area of safety behaviors by promoting safe work habits.
  • Be a good team player with ability to successfully partner with team members and contacts from multiple backgrounds in a global R&D organization and is able to work independently is expected.
  • Being open for learning and using new digital tools and for learning new techniques and capabilities is strongly preferred

Requirements

  • Bachelor in Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical engineering or in equivalent field and MBO graduates are also encouraged to apply.
  • Strong preference in candidates who has experience in research & development, in operation of lab equipment or leading sessions applying human panelists.
  • New graduates are also encouraged to apply if their interest is high on the human sensory, taste and odor testing topics.
  • Experience and ability to collect, analyze and interpret data is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in technology areas such as analytical and sensory science and characterization techniques, calibration and operation of laboratory equipment is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in the team with team members from diverse backgrounds is required. The candidate should be able to interact well with other technologists, scientists, human sensory panelists and leader.
  • Fluent in English is crucial. Being fluent in Dutch is a plus.
